Flying into Phoenix (PHX)<\/strong> and renting a car, we made our way north toward the stunning red rock landscapes of Sedona, Arizona<\/strong>. The first landmark to catch our eye was Bell Rock<\/strong>, its iconic silhouette towering above the horizon as we cruised along the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n

For this trip, we decided to trade rugged outdoor camping for a bit of luxury, staying at the Amara Resort<\/strong>. Known for its infinity pool and spa, the Amara offered the perfect balance of comfort in a breathtaking setting. While this wasn\u2019t our typical adventure, pampering ourselves in a beautiful place like Sedona felt like a great way to recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n

An Early Start: Hiking Doe Mountain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our first activity was a sunrise hike to Doe Mountain<\/strong>, an easy trek that leads to the top of a mesa<\/strong>. The rock\u2019s sheer drops and loose footing<\/strong> require caution, as the terrain can quickly become dangerous for the unwary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bell Rock is also a vortex site<\/strong>, one of Sedona\u2019s famous locations believed to radiate spiritual energy. People from around the world visit these vortex sites to meditate, reflect, or simply feel the unique energy Sedona is known for.<\/p>\n\n\n

Thunderstorm Terror on the West Fork Trail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Our next adventure was the West Fork Trail<\/strong>, a stunning hike that takes you through towering canyon walls alongside a creek. What started as a serene trek quickly turned into one of the most frightening outdoor experiences of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we hiked into the canyon, dark clouds gathered, and a thunderstorm<\/strong> rolled in. We found shelter under an overhanging canyon cliff, watching as lightning flashed and rain poured down. At first, we thought the storm would pass quickly\u2014the radar showed only 10 minutes of rain\u2014but 40 minutes later, we were still pinned down.<\/p>\n\n\n

Then it happened. A massive lightning strike lit up the canyon, followed almost instantly by a deafening crack of thunder. We felt a tingling, numbing sensation in our feet<\/strong>\u2014a ground current from lightning striking the top of the canyon above us. It wasn\u2019t a direct hit, but it was close enough to terrify us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that moment, I knew we had to leave. We ran through the rain, the flooded trail adding to the chaos. The scene felt surreal and dramatic, like something out of a movie. On the way back, we stopped briefly at a cave we had passed earlier and found another couple waiting out the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, we decided to push on. The car was about a mile away, and the thought of getting out of the storm kept us moving. Soaked and shaken, we made it back safely, vowing to take it easier for the next few days.<\/p>\n\n\n

Taking It Easy Around Sedona<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After the intensity of the West Fork Trail, we decided to slow down and enjoy a more relaxed pace. We spent the next few days unwinding around Sedona, soaking in the stunning scenery, exploring at our leisure, and reflecting on the adventure so far.<\/p>\n\n\n
